Hoff to teach free cartooning class in Honomu

Folks of all ages and abilities are invited to a free cartooning class offered Monday through Friday, June 4-8, at Hilo Coast United Church of Christ in Honomu.

Gary Hoff, visual arts instructor at Kamehameha High School in Keaau and an editorial cartoonist for the Hawaii Herald-Tribune, will teach the class. Participants will learn the basics of caricature, create their own cartoon characters and learn to tell stories with pictures.

“Never tried cartooning, but think you’d like to give it a try,” asked Hoff. “Remember, Grandma Moses was in her 70s before she started painting.”

The class will meet from 10 a.m to noon Monday through Wednesday and Friday, and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday. For more information and to register, please call the church at 963-6330.

Hilo Coast United Church of Christ is located 15 minutes from Hilo at 28-1630 Old Mamalahoa Highway in Honomu.
